EU Digital Product Passport for Shopify Merchants in 2026
If you sell into the EU on Shopify, you have probably seen headlines about the EU Digital Product Passport and wondered whether every hoodie now needs a QR code. Short answer: not tomorrow, and not for every SKU. The Commission launched the Digital Product Passport Registry and a testing environment on 20 July 2026. The first hard merchant-facing deadline is 18 Feb 2027 for certain large batteries. Apparel, furniture, and consumer electronics still sit behind delegated acts and transition windows.
This post is for Shopify developers, PMs, and sustainability leads who need a clean split: passport software is one job, per-order impact evidence is another. GoodAPI does not issue or host Digital Product Passports. We plant GPS-verified trees, recover plastic, and run live donations so you have action evidence next to whatever passport stack you eventually pick.
What an EU Digital Product Passport Actually Is
In plain language, an EU Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record tied to a physical product. It can hold material composition, repairability, recycled content, compliance statements, and other facts the law requires for that product group. Consumers, repairers, customs, and authorities see different slices based on role.
The legal basis is the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, ESPR (EU) 2024/1781. Article 13 is the Registry piece. Product data is stored in a decentralised way by the economic operator or a DPP service provider. The Registry stores unique identifiers and high-level registration metadata, not the full passport payload.
How it works in five beats:
- Gather the data the applicable act requires.
- Create the passport and register it.
- The Registry issues a unique registration identifier.
- A data carrier such as a QR code on the product links to the passport.
- Access depends on who is scanning.
Registration can go through a secure UI or an API. Operators can request proof of registration as a secure electronic document, which matters in B2B. Six of the eight DPP interoperability standards (unique identifiers, interoperability, data carriers, APIs, data exchange protocols, and data storage) are already published. The Commission still lists the remaining two for September 2026.
Vendors such as GreenMetric.AI, Devera, and OpenDPP compete in measurement and passport-software SERPs. That is their lane. GoodAPI’s lane is verified action after checkout.
The Digital Product Passport Registry Is Live. Your SKU Is Not Due Tomorrow.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778, adopted 16 July 2026 and published 17 July 2026, sets the practical arrangements for the Registry. It entered into force on 6 August 2026. On 20 July 2026 the Commission opened the Registry plus a testing environment so operators can enrol, verify identity, and practise registration flows.
That is infrastructure. It is not a blanket duty to passport every Shopify SKU this year.
The only firm merchant-facing deadline you should treat as hard today is 18 February 2027 for certain large batteries under the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542: electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport batteries, and industrial batteries with capacity above 2 kWh. On 21 August 2026 the Commission published updated battery-passport guidance that maps data points by category. Organisation enrolment and guidance can be available while full battery deposit readiness still depends on semantic catalogues and implementing detail. Do not claim every battery registration already succeeds end to end.
The Registry will also support ESPR product groups including textiles, steel and aluminium, tyres, furniture, ICT, and energy-related products, plus batteries, construction products, toys, and detergents via other Union law. The Commission’s indicative timeline for delegated act adoption (not merchant go-live) points to iron and steel in 2026, textiles, tyres, and aluminium in Q3 to Q4 2027, furniture in 2028, and mattresses and ICT in 2029. After a delegated act, operators get a transition of at least 18 months. That is why “textiles and electronics in 2027” is too sloppy for a Shopify planning deck.
Digital Product Passport Ecommerce vs Green Claims
Digital product passport ecommerce and green claims are two different EU jobs. Confusing them produces bad roadmaps.
A passport answers: what must this product disclose in a machine-readable way when it is placed on the EU market? ECGT (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition), the live marketing rules often discussed next to the withdrawn Green Claims Directive proposal, answers: what can you say on a product page, homepage, or email without misleading EU consumers?
Our EU green claims Shopify guide covers the claims layer. Vague labels like “eco-friendly” fail. Specific, evidenced actions such as “1 tree planted per order, verified by Veritree” can hold up when the evidence is real. A passport does not fix a sloppy claim. A tree does not register a passport.
| Job | What it is | Who owns the tooling | GoodAPI role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Product Passport | Regulated product data container under ESPR / Battery Regulation | DPP vendors and economic operators | None. We do not issue or host DPPs |
| Green claims / ECGT | Rules on marketing language to EU consumers | Legal + merchandising | Action evidence for specific claims |
| Per-order impact | Trees, plastic recovery, charity gifts on each order | Shopify app + partners | Primary product: Grow, Give, Lead |

What Shopify Merchants Should Do in 2026
If you are a US brand selling into the EU through Shopify Markets, you are not automatically “out of scope” because your HQ is in Austin. For product rules, the economic operator who places the product on the EU market (often an importer or authorised representative for non-EU manufacturers) carries real duties. This is not legal advice. It is a planning prompt: map who that operator is for your supply chain before you buy passport software.
Classify SKUs against Commission timelines
Separate battery-adjacent products from apparel, furniture, and general merchandise. Only battery categories under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 have a firm 18 February 2027 passport date. Everything else waits on delegated acts plus at least 18 months of transition.
Enrol early if you will be an operator
Use the Commission’s testing environment and Registry docs. Practise identity verification and registration through the UI or API. Request proof-of-registration documents when you need them for B2B. Do not confuse enrolment with a live SKU obligation.
Pick passport software only when your group is in scope
GreenMetric.AI, Devera, OpenDPP, and peers own measurement and passport hosting. Evaluate them when your product group has a delegated act or Battery Regulation duty. GoodAPI will not replace that stack.
Keep claim evidence honest on the storefront
ECGT pressure is already here for EU-facing copy. Pair specific action claims with evidence URLs from trees, plastic, or donations. Do not invent carbon-neutral product labels from offsets. See the unified impact stack for how trees, plastic, and charity sit in one Shopify install.
A Passport Is a Container. Impact Is an Action.
A Digital Product Passport stores facts the law requires about the product. It does not plant anything. It does not remove a bottle from a waterway. It does not move money to a 501(c)(3).
Per-order impact is the opposite shape. On Grow, GoodAPI is free to install, with the first 50 trees and 100 bottles free, then $0.43 per tree and $0.05 per bottle with no monthly fee on that plan. Trees are GPS-verified through Veritree, our reforestation partner. Give is $15/mo for donations across 1.3 million verified 501(c)(3)s, with a 0 percent platform fee on the gift and commercial co-venture coverage in all 50 US states. Lead is $49/mo for checkout round-ups, API access, and custom work. The Shopify App Store listing carries a 5.0★ rating across 221 reviews.
Those evidence URLs can sit in post-purchase email, account pages, and sustainability copy next to whatever DPP QR code you eventually print. The passport answers “what is this product.” The impact receipt answers “what did this order do.”
How to Put Per-Order Evidence Next to a DPP
You do not wait for textiles delegated acts to start collecting proof of action. You start now, on the orders you already ship.
Install GoodAPI. Turn on Grow for trees and plastic. Add Give if you want checkout donations with CCV handled. Configure metafields and Klaviyo so every order confirmation can show a concrete line: trees planted, bottles recovered, or dollars gifted, each with a verification path.
When a passport becomes mandatory for your product group, keep the stacks separate. Passport software holds regulated product attributes. GoodAPI holds order-level action evidence. Link both from the brand’s sustainability page if you want, but do not mash them into one fake compliance blob.
That split is the whole point of this article. Passport vendors will keep winning the “how do I build a DPP” search. Merchants still need something to show a shopper after checkout that is specific, cheap, and verifiable. That is where GoodAPI sits.
Start With Evidence You Can Defend
If your catalog will someday need an EU Digital Product Passport, start classifying SKUs and watching delegated acts. If your storefront already sells to EU consumers, fix vague green claims now. If you want per-order proof that sits next to either of those jobs, install Grow or Give from the Shopify App Store and keep the passport question with the vendors who actually issue passports.
Product detail for charity checkout lives on the donations page. For the marketing rules that already bite, keep the ECGT guide open. For how trees, plastic, and donations share one install, use the unified impact stack.
