Founded in 1988 by Stephanie Goetzinger as a volunteer-run operation in her home, Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Newport, North Carolina dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured, sick, and orphaned native North Carolina wildlife. Its mission is to rehabilitate and release wildlife while educating the community about conservation. In 2024 the shelter took in almost 2,400 animals from 21 counties across Eastern North Carolina.
